A fact check provided by CNN’s Carol Costello on Wednesday refuted claims that the Clinton Foundation kept 80 percent of its donations, which Trump surrogate Gina Louden had insisted was true because she got the figure from a Google search.

During a panel discussion about allegations from ex-employees that Donald Trump’s Trump University was a “fraudulent scheme,” Louden fought back by attacking the Clinton Foundation.

“The Clinton Foundation hangs on more than 80 percent of the money that is raised,” Louden charged.

“Where are you getting that figure?” Costello wondered.

“It’s out there,” Louden insisted. “It’s everywhere, you can google it yourself.”

“At what point does this not become okay?” Democratic strategist Sally Kohn asked. “You can’t do that. This is a democracy, this is a civil society. We actually care about facts and information. And at what point in this crazy election does it become unacceptable to address real serious substantive concerns with your candidate by continuing to deflect and attack?”

“At a certain point, we have to just call that,” Kohn remarked. “We have to say that’s not okay.”

Costello shut down the debate, explaining that she was “uncomfortable” with Louden’s dubious allegations.

“I don’t know where you’re getting your figures,” Costello said. “It kind of makes me uncomfortable. I don’t know where you get that 80 percent thing. And I don’t get my information by googling.”

Later in the hour, the CNN host returned to the subject with a proper fact check.

“Trump supporter Gina Louden said the Clinton Foundation — and I’m quoting here — keeps upward of 80 percent of the money raised,” Costello explained. “I promised to look into that number for you and my team has.”

Citing Politifact and FactCheck.org, Costello pointed out that the “80 percent number has been floated by many conservatives, but they may be referring only to the amount donated by the Clinton Foundation to outside charities.”

“The bulk of the Clinton Foundation’s charitable work is actually performed in house,” she continued. “And last year, one independent watchdog did an analysis of the foundation’s funding and found that 89 percent of its funding went to charity, earning it an ‘A’ rating.”
